Human First Impressions
Imami is quiet and attempts to be unobtrusive, despite the fact that she's not exactly a common-looking character. Really, she seems to try to completely detach herself from most large crowds, and tends to shy immediately away from people who approach too quickly or make sudden movements. She's also a selective mute - while she can speak, she typically chooses to communicate in sign, and seems to calm much more completely when she can.
Though her dress varies from day to day, she's always seen wearing the same sash - long and flowing, decorated with loose coins and chains, and with a pair of woven knots at each end suspended by heavy chains. To the astute, one might note that these weaves appear to be wicks - and to that end, similarly astute individuals will notice they do indeed smell faintly of fuel and ash.
Info
For those outside her small village, Imami is a bit of a mystery. People are aware of how and why she came to be in her situation, but beyond that, the details are vague at best. More well-known is the reputation of said village.
Nestled in the sands and the desert, this nameless village is known for two things: very particular plants, capable of chemically lightening skin, and their firedancers. Firedancers would use these plants to alter their skin, creating designs that spoke to their beliefs and worldviews, and so they were striking and commanding presences. During previous reigns of the country's rulers, all was well with this - the villagers were lauded as important to the cities, providing skilled entertainment. Imami herself was never really known - despite her reported beauty and skill, her fellow villagers were very protective of her. Partly, this was because of her selective mutism - a shy person by nature, Imami doesn't handle loud voices or aggressiveness very well. Even still, the lord of the land insisted on having her for one of his concubines - and this particular lord, as it turned out, would not take no for an answer, even if he had to decimate an otherwise revered village. So, in order to save her people and not incite a war they had no chance of winning, Imami agreed to go back to the palace with the lord's messenger, leaving behind all she had known. She now stays in the palace, performing at his whims and just trying to keep her head down, hoping to perhaps make it out of here in time to return to her people and the one she'd come to love prior to the arrangement.
